It’s a time to share and honour the achievements, stories, and heritage of Black communities across the UK and beyond, whilst also shining the spotlight on local talent, resilience and artistry.
From pop-ups buzzing with local Black-owned businesses and community celebrations filled with laughter, to live performances and poetry events that give young voices a platform for expressions - there’s no shortage of events to attend. Whether you’re a regular attender of the annual celebrations or looking for something new to get involved with, there’s a wide array of events that promises something meaningful and inspiring for anyone and everyone!
Here’s a closer look at what’s happening around South London this month:
My Pop Up Events - West Norwood
Celebrate the 77th anniversary of the Windrush with a showcase of talent and creativity within African and Caribbean communities. In commemoration of Black History Month, My Pop Up Events will be running a one-day indoor market on Saturday 4th October in addition to their recurring Sunday pop-up, with a vibrant mix of food stalls, fashion and jewelry, self-care supplies and much more!
The event has been designed to shine a spotlight on emerging African and Caribbean entrepreneurs and business, providing them with an opportunity to connect with the community, advertise their products and introduce their businesses.
Beyond shopping, this event promotes the celebration of Afro-Caribbean heritages in the heart of West Norwood - it’s a chance to meet the makers, listen to their personal journeys, and engage in a space that champions creativity, innovation, and cultural pride.
The event will run from 11am to 6pm - All are welcome to this FREE event, though registration on Eventbrite is required (link below).
Black Culture Market - The Department Store
Saturday 4th October and Sunday 5th October - Don’t miss the two-day pop-up market at The Department Store, run by Black Culture Market, celebrating Black creativity in fashion, art, and lifestyle. Bringing together emerging artists and independent makers, the events provides a high-profile platform to showcase their talents to the local community and beyond, whilst advocating for the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit within South London communities.
With over 40 traders expected, attendees can explore a wide array of unique fashion collections, limited-edition art, home cooking and baking, and passionate displays of culture, all by Black-owned businesses and creative brands.
The event goes beyond commerce, but provides a space that encourages networking and community-building - promoting the support of Black-owned businesses around the UK. Visitors can engage with the creators, support brands that reinvest in their communities, and enjoy the good vibes, complete with music and entertainment from a live DJ.

Performances include productions that challenge perception, theatre exploring identity and cultural heritage, and powerful spoken word delivered by young talented artists. Audience members can enjoy an evening (or many) of entertainment, reflect on issues important in the Afro-Caribbean community, all whilst supporting initiatives the help to nurture the next generation of Black talent. Poetic Unity will also be running their monthly performance at the Poetry Foyer - limited FREE tickets available!

Annual Black History Month Celebration - Brixton Immortals Domino Club (BIDC)
The Brixton Immortals Domino Club (BIDC) has been the cornerstone of Brixton’s African-Caribbean community for decades, offering a safe and welcoming space for celebrations, story sharing, to keep cultural traditions alive, and of course, spirited games of dominoes. Their annual Black History Month celebrations are frequently held as one of the highlights of the season, and this year they’re back and better!
Taking place at Clapham Library, BIDC will be running a Black History Month All-Dayer, with activities running from 11am on Saturday 25th October until the early hours of Sunday (1am) - expect cultural exhibitions and workshops, raffle draws, live music and dance parties, and, naturally, domino tournaments - the club’s signature activity.
For many, this won’t just be a day of entertainment, but a chance to connect with neighbours and members of the community, honour the legacy of past generation, and share the heritages that have shaped Brixton’s cultural identity. This celebration therefore embodies the essence of Black History Month: community, creativity, and pride - a space for intergenerational connections in a lively and welcoming environment.
Final Thoughts - Why Black History Month Matters to South London
Black History Month in South London is more than just a series of events - it’s a direct reflection of the rich cultural diversity and resilience of its communities. Markets, performances, and community gatherings simply provide opportunities to celebrate more widely the acheivements of the Black community, educate others of the historical significance, and foster connections amongst peers.
Supporting these events means supporting local talent and youth, providing a stage for underrepresented voices, and contributing to a community that places value on creative expression. By watching the performances of Black artistry, supporting local Black-led businesses at pop-ups, or joining in with community celebrations, you become part of a collective effort to celebrate and preserve South London’s vibrant Black cultures.
Whatever you’re into, Black History Month in South London has an event, a collective, a performance for you to enjoy cultural experiences, open dialogues, and engage with a thriving, dynamic community.
